Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in colour than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin colour, forms deposits in the skin.
Age or ‘liver’ spots are a common form of hyperpigmentation. They occur due to sun damage and these small, darkened patches are usually found on the hands and face or other areas frequently exposed to the sun.
Hyperpigmentation is also evident in melasma (also known as ‘the mask of pregnancy’) or chloasma spots, which are larger patches of darker skin that usually occur as a result of hormonal changes (during pregnancy, for example).
Freckles are an inherited example of hyperpigmentation, while acne scars and other injuries to the skin are examples of external causes.

There are various treatments for hyperpigmentation. These usually involve a skin care regime such as the Obagi Nu-Derm range followed by an Obagi Blue Peel, or the Theraderm range followed by the LA peel. Will the hyperpigmentation return if I stop using the treatments?
